WH&E M2 4 : 2 St Albans M8

We started off in typical fashion of being pinned back quite a bit, thanks to their star player creating havoc down the right hand side. After a little bit we were 1-0 down. We then decided to stretch the play a little bit and found our feet. Stuart Symons hit the ball down the length of the pitch to Guy who picked it up and scored a goal. 1-1. They were a bit stunned by this and we definitely got back into the game. Not long after we found the ball in the D again where Jason slotted home for his second goal! 2-1

Things then got interesting as Luke got stick tackled whilst in possession of the ball, and then got a green card! With Luke back on the pitch just before the end of the half, it wasn’t too long before Guy received the ball top-D and shot, where Theo was at the far post to put it in for 3-1 at half-time.

Not too much happened in the second half, but the game opened up as they pulled one back. However, after this St Albans never looked like threatening again. Guy managed to get his second goal of the game to give us some breathing space, and he would have had a hattrick if it wasn’t for a sublime save from their ‘keeper too.

Comfortable winners in the end, 4-2.

MotM: The Chapmans. Two goals for Guy, an assist for Theo’s goal, and all watched by Guy’s dad too!

DotD: No comment (Luke!)

WH&E L1 0 : 0 Teddington L3

The ladies 1s played brilliantly against Teddington who are 4th in the league.

We started super strong with a few runs up front, lots of accurate passing, calling and movement off the ball to put the pressure on the opposition. They fought back similarly but Team Defence were on their A game and were able to dismiss their attackers easily. The first half was very even and ended with no goals.

In the 2nd half we decided we hadn’t worked hard enough so we decided to give ourselves several short corners to defend. A couple of them awarded due to dick of the day Rachelle Alexandra “diving” on to the ball to “accidentally” clear it off the back line!

We had a couple more chances up front but we just couldn’t get into their net.

In classic L1s fashion, in the last minute of the game Bethany stepped back into our defending D to mark and was about to beautifully clear the ball when it smashed into her foot instead…. Thank the hockey gods they didn’t score!!!!!

A 0-0 draw, the first draw of the season for us and the first point of 2020!

We’ll be building up the momentum from here and would absolutely LOVE if you lovely people reading this could come and support us next week at home against Southgate at 12pm.

MOTM was too hard to narrow down and absolutely everyone played their best so we have voted ourselves team of the match instead. Just need to get some goals in the back of the net now…

WH&E L2 0 : 3 Hendon & Mill Hill L2

The ladies 2s came up against Hendon & Mill Hill in a top of the table clash.

1-0 down in the first 36 seconds – it was going to be one of those days! Thankfully, we did begin to realise that we were actually playing hockey and held them to 1-0 for the first half.

The second half was played. However, none of the team can really remember what happened except for some notable moments including: half the midfield watching the “pretty rainbow in the sky” instead of the ball, missing the opposition’s 2nd goal. Then Lisa’s running commentary on her fabulous tackle (yes only one!), for which she then had to apologise, explaining that she never normally makes tackles like that and we think they scored a third one (they did).

Thanks to our marvellous umpire Dom, and to Gav for recruiting our new player, Paula, who had a fab first game.

MOTM to birthday girl Romy for excellent goalkeeping skills and getting us out of a fair few scrapes.

Still #teamoftheyear though 💜

WH&E M1 2 : 7 Bishop’s Stortford M2

Things haven’t quite clicked after the year end break and this continued this week but at least some patches of good play providing hope.

A makeshift team due to injuries in terms people playing out of position. This resulted in a fairly early goal that put us on the back foot. The patches of good play resulted in several short corners with Asher twisting the opposition defence around. Two of these were expertly converted by Jim Gatting.

Unfortunately, the combination of broken possession due to a good Bishops Stortford press and fast attacking play meant we were outgunned this time. 7-2 loss. Not good enough but better than the previous week. Hoping now we can get a fitter team out next week.

Shout out in particular to Rafi Zeff for dropping into right back with no complaint to do his part for the team.

WH&E L1 0 : 1 Hendon & Mill Hill L1

The ladies 1s woke up early on Saturday morning to play Hendon and Mill Hill at Ashmole. Big thanks to the lovely Charlotte and Michelle for stepping up as some of our regulars were unable to play. After the first 10 minutes we were awake and played an evenly matched 1st half with a few brilliant scoring opportunities and some solid defending. Great running from Helen, Charlotte and Michelle up front gave us a few breakaways and good control by Sam and the Karen sandwich made sure that the ball was well played through the midfield.

The second half looked to be just as evenly matched, although slightly more aggressive with one of their opponents questioning “what sport were we playing?” as she clearly forgot when trying to take the body before the ball. We had some great scoring opportunities in the second half, a brilliantly executed short corner that T almost deflected in and a remarkable save from their keeper saved what would have been a beaut goal from Charlotte. Team defence stayed strong with T and Sarah having some great clearances and Mia being strong in the middle to pick it up and dribble out to safety.

Then in the last 5 minutes, Chris saved a straight shot from a short corner and a goal mouth scramble ensued…. somehow after a few pinball deflections the ball ended up in our net. It was a close game but in true Ladies 1’s fashion, the luck wasn’t on our side. Player of the match to Mia for great dribbling through the middle and great passing out wide (honourable mentions to Charlotte, Michelle) and POTP goes to … Michelle for being down on the pitch more than me?

WH&E L2 0 : 0 BA Hayes L2

We should have won.

That is all.

WH&E M2 2 : 6 Bedford Vets

The men’s 2s battled hard in a game that was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Neat passing in triangles, good possession and a pretty even game with the score 3-2 to Bedford at half time, after goals for Zak and Guy. But the experience of the Vets showed in the end, with 3 more goals scored towards the end of the game leaving Winchmore deflated, but with a few lessons well learned.

WH&E M1 1 : 8 Broxbourne M3

Adam scored 1. Nothing else worthy of mention!

WH&E L1 3 : 2 Hendon & Mill Hill L1

WK4L1Well where do i start…
Roughly 80 minutes of play
5 goals
3 rugby tackles
1 green card
Which sport were we playing again?

It was a bit of a scrappy match against Hendon & Mill Hill but we came out tops with a 3-2 win 💃🏼
The first goal was from Rachelle Alexandra on a short corner, the 2nd from Vicki as part of a great team attack and the 3rd from Beth Deane as part of another great attack.

The support from the men’s and the ladies’ 2s from the sideline was brilliant, thank you!

Woman of the match – honourable mention to Vicki for a beautiful goal and lots of great running. Joint winners go to Shell for lovely defending and great composure during the game (well, more than usual) and first goal ever, and Chris for lots of great saves!

DOTD to Sarah E-Q for hitting herself in the face and still giving away a short. Ladies playing today know who the true dotd is…3 out of 4 games won, what a start to the season Ladies 💪🏼💪🏼

WH&E M2 3 : 6 Bedford Vets

We started this game with a must-win attitude as Bedford Vets were on 1 point and only a place above us at second bottom of the table.

We started brightly and arguably were the better team when a counter-attack by the Vets down the right hand side came – our defender was one-on-one with the attacker who made a weak push, and by a stroke of luck went past the defender who couldn’t get his stick down quick enough. The attacker then received their weak attempt, and slotted home past the keeper. 1-0 down roughly 10 minutes into the first half.

This didn’t discourage us as we had seen our slight advantage in the first minutes of the game. Some moments of magic came as we passed the ball through most of the team before Luke threaded a ball through to Joseph on the right-wing, who pushed the ball to John Lappin at the top of the D. He controlled the ball, one touch inside and let rip a shot – fortunately his shot instantly deflected off a defender’s stick which lobbed everyone inside the box, including the keeper. A wonder goal, luckily. 1-1.

We had additional good spells of play mostly down the left wing, however it was another quick break by the opposing team which led to another goal for 2-1 to the home team. It was then apparent who the standout player was for them.

The team response was great again, as we continued our possession style attack. Up to this point, most of our play was happening through Rob D who was absolutely everywhere – as he started one of our many attacks where the ball entered through the right-hand side of the D again, and the ball was then drilled to the back post, where Theo, kneeling down with the stick on the ground waiting for the ball patiently knocked it in for 2-2!

It wasn’t too long before a similar play saw Theo get passed the ball inside the D, and he skipped past one player elegantly and with only the keeper to beat, pushed it past. The keeper got a slight touch on the ball, so it was a nervy few moments before the ball dribbled into the goal – with Luke around for insurance just in case the keeper managed to stop it. 3-2, our first lead of the season!

Unfortunately we couldn’t hold on, as near the end of the first half, the home team managed to get a short corner. They messed this up but managed to get it to the top of the D where their striker slapped the ball hard and low in the right hand corner – Nick managed to get a touch on it but not enough to for a clean clearance. So 3-3 at half time.

However, the second half was not like our first. We lost our shape a bit as the game became more stretched. They had one player who we realised really ran the show, who kept on hitting us on the counter-attack. Shortly after HT we were 4-3 down.

A fifth goal was similar in fashion in the sense that it was more so a counter-attack, but with the kudos of the opposing team’s fitness as the middle of the pitch opened up leaving space to run into. The opposing playmaker ended up getting the ball into the D before squaring it to a teammate to slap it into the goal. 5-3. Nevertheless, we remained competitive up until this point, with one major chance falling to Luke inside the D to resurrect our second half, who just couldn’t quite hit the ball towards the goal – possibly our best opportunity of the second half.

The icing on the cake for Bedford was another short corner in the dying moments of the game, where they similarly messed up their routine, yet managed to find another great striker who placed it with power yet again, with Nick unable to do anything as it deflected once more from his stick and into the goal making it 6-3 at full time.

MOTM: Theo for his two goals. A special mention to Rob D who was instrumental throughout the game, and whose efforts on the pitch deserved much more. Also notable was John P who had two stints in goal for us too, and played the final part of the game as a winger.

DOTD: Joseph – revealed some questionable food choices to some of the squad post-match.
