WH&E M1 4 : 1 Bishops Stortford M3

Late cancellation of events meant we had a last-minute complement of 11 players with Jake Sumner joining us. Onwards to Bishop Stortford.

A very good start with an early goal after some nice passing moves finished off neatly by Luke Trevill.

Goals then dried up but possession and passing remained reasonable although the early goal led to some complacency. Bishops Stortford made some breaks and earned a couple of short corners. 1-0 up at half time.

We pulled ourselves together and decided to up the intensity. Asher and Harry dropped into midfield allowing Colin to push up. Colin earned himself a goal and supported Jake and Luke up front. Luke smartly finished twice in the second half to complete his hat trick.

Stortford finally piled on some pressure with help from the umpires – green for Matt followed by yellow for Dom, a few dodgy short corners too. Eventually a goal line foot at a short corner led to a penalty stroke. Jim who had been strong in goal came close but Bishops Stortford undeservedly scored from the flick.

Good result. Final score 4-1 win.

WH&E L1 0 : 2 Old Merchant Taylors L1

WK22L1So bottom of the league you say?
A win or draw puts us in safety you say?
11 players you say?
Well you’ve got it in the bag then, right?
Wrong!

3 players down for the count with coronavirus knocking on their doors meant we were down to 8. But don’t you worry, we had 2 players from the 2s, no wait, make that 1. So 9…

The ladies 1s showed exactly what hard work and team spirit is this week. No one dropped their heads no one gave up and no one stopped believing we could win this against 12.

Karen played like she was possessed, the lone striker upfront through on goal, yes it’s in! No wait, she shoulder-barged the defender to play the ball, no goal. Then with 5 or so minutes of a tough half OMT snuck one in. But it didn’t end there; second half starts Karen again playing possessed (claiming she’s sick too but not coronavirus) made the run of a lifetime and with Karen Goode with her we looked to equalise….NO it just missed the goal, hitting the side netting…then Sula decided to crawl on the floor and do a backwards roll, it was beautiful and an incredible display of acrobatics 😂

A 2nd one slipped in as they finally realised that 11 v 9 meant they could overrun us in defence, somewhere along the way Caroline Briers taking a stick in face, but not to let the team down she soldiered on.

Some dodgy decisions by a guy in yellow meant Sam ended up off the pitch with a green for not taking the opposition player out…

In true Ladies 1s style we ended on a defensive short corner defended well and keeping the score at 2-0. A 10th player would have made all the difference, stretching their defence to breaking point, a full team would have been a certain win.

MotM – Karen Gray – for playing 3 positions at once and doing it amazingly

DotD/PotP – Karen Gray – trying to get herself a green at the same time as Sam by shouting “seriously!!!” As loudly as possible…

A tough fight, coronavirus the ultimate winner…

WH&E L2 0 : 5 Teddington L6

WK22L2Despite being a bit thin on the ground (the umpire asked if we were waiting for another car🤣) we had a great game. Everyone played excellently and Teddington were frustrated that they couldn’t dominate as they would expect to against 8.

Unfortunately though a 5-0 loss sees them leapfrog us in to 2nd and we ended the day in 4th.

Special mentions to Pippa Deane and Erin at the back and Romy in goal for clearing far more than they let in and of course Kate Smith for being everywhere as usual!

WH&E M2 1 : 9 Hertford M4

Continuing the theme of playing hockey with fewer than 11 players, the men’s 2s lined up against a strong Hertford 4s with 10 after a late injury.

They were a strong team, well organised, and especially strong in attack. Our young centre midfield pairing (Haydn and Ellis) did a great job, launching us on some strong counter attacks, whilst Balazs did an equally sterling job in goal limiting the damage.

We did get a few short corners, and from one of them Huw got his first ever goal in competitive hockey, with his strike skimming the top of the backboard.

The second half started well, with Winchmore firmly on top and providing a lot of threat, but sadly no goals. Later on we got a bit tired and they came back strong. The final score was 9-1 but a decent performance by a young team in a tough league.

MOTM: Haydn dominating midfield. Nice stuff.

WH&E M2 4 : 2 St Albans M8

We started off in typical fashion of being pinned back quite a bit, thanks to their star player creating havoc down the right hand side. After a little bit we were 1-0 down. We then decided to stretch the play a little bit and found our feet. Stuart Symons hit the ball down the length of the pitch to Guy who picked it up and scored a goal. 1-1. They were a bit stunned by this and we definitely got back into the game. Not long after we found the ball in the D again where Jason slotted home for his second goal! 2-1

Things then got interesting as Luke got stick tackled whilst in possession of the ball, and then got a green card! With Luke back on the pitch just before the end of the half, it wasn’t too long before Guy received the ball top-D and shot, where Theo was at the far post to put it in for 3-1 at half-time.

Not too much happened in the second half, but the game opened up as they pulled one back. However, after this St Albans never looked like threatening again. Guy managed to get his second goal of the game to give us some breathing space, and he would have had a hattrick if it wasn’t for a sublime save from their ‘keeper too.

Comfortable winners in the end, 4-2.

MotM: The Chapmans. Two goals for Guy, an assist for Theo’s goal, and all watched by Guy’s dad too!

DotD: No comment (Luke!)

WH&E L1 0 : 0 Teddington L3

The ladies 1s played brilliantly against Teddington who are 4th in the league.

We started super strong with a few runs up front, lots of accurate passing, calling and movement off the ball to put the pressure on the opposition. They fought back similarly but Team Defence were on their A game and were able to dismiss their attackers easily. The first half was very even and ended with no goals.

In the 2nd half we decided we hadn’t worked hard enough so we decided to give ourselves several short corners to defend. A couple of them awarded due to dick of the day Rachelle Alexandra “diving” on to the ball to “accidentally” clear it off the back line!

We had a couple more chances up front but we just couldn’t get into their net.

In classic L1s fashion, in the last minute of the game Bethany stepped back into our defending D to mark and was about to beautifully clear the ball when it smashed into her foot instead…. Thank the hockey gods they didn’t score!!!!!

A 0-0 draw, the first draw of the season for us and the first point of 2020!

We’ll be building up the momentum from here and would absolutely LOVE if you lovely people reading this could come and support us next week at home against Southgate at 12pm.

MOTM was too hard to narrow down and absolutely everyone played their best so we have voted ourselves team of the match instead. Just need to get some goals in the back of the net now…

WH&E L2 0 : 3 Hendon & Mill Hill L2

The ladies 2s came up against Hendon & Mill Hill in a top of the table clash.

1-0 down in the first 36 seconds – it was going to be one of those days! Thankfully, we did begin to realise that we were actually playing hockey and held them to 1-0 for the first half.

The second half was played. However, none of the team can really remember what happened except for some notable moments including: half the midfield watching the “pretty rainbow in the sky” instead of the ball, missing the opposition’s 2nd goal. Then Lisa’s running commentary on her fabulous tackle (yes only one!), for which she then had to apologise, explaining that she never normally makes tackles like that and we think they scored a third one (they did).

Thanks to our marvellous umpire Dom, and to Gav for recruiting our new player, Paula, who had a fab first game.

MOTM to birthday girl Romy for excellent goalkeeping skills and getting us out of a fair few scrapes.

Still #teamoftheyear though 💜

WH&E M1 2 : 7 Bishop’s Stortford M2

Things haven’t quite clicked after the year end break and this continued this week but at least some patches of good play providing hope.

A makeshift team due to injuries in terms people playing out of position. This resulted in a fairly early goal that put us on the back foot. The patches of good play resulted in several short corners with Asher twisting the opposition defence around. Two of these were expertly converted by Jim Gatting.

Unfortunately, the combination of broken possession due to a good Bishops Stortford press and fast attacking play meant we were outgunned this time. 7-2 loss. Not good enough but better than the previous week. Hoping now we can get a fitter team out next week.

Shout out in particular to Rafi Zeff for dropping into right back with no complaint to do his part for the team.

WH&E M1 3 : 0 Bishops Stortford M3

The Men’s 1s were at home and hunting for 3 points against Bishops Stortford 3s, having already played out a draw with Stortford 2s earlier in the season.

In a very tight first half it was clear that this was not going to be an easy game, but Winchmore didn’t panic and stuck to the plans of a solid passing and possession game. And that patience paid off when the deadlock was broken shortly before half time – a diagonal aerial into the opposition D was brought down by Adam Machray who passed it inside for Colin to smash past the keeper and put Winchmore 1-0 up at the break.

Back out for the second half and it was more of the same – good possession, passing and movement brought two more goals – the first from a nice move down the right which Harry Stone swept home from near the penalty spot. The second from Stone again, this time going himself round the back on the right side of the goal before pulling the pass across goal only for a Stortford defender to beautifully side foot it through their keeper’s legs!

3-0 the final score and a solid performance all round – Winchmore controlling the game from the back and snuffing out any chances Stortford tried to create. 🏑💪💜

MOTM: James for solid defence and distribution from left back.DOTD: In the first half it looked likedly to be Colin, after putting it wide from close range. But this was easily gazumped in the second half by Adam who rounded the keeper and only had to pull the ball back and pass it into an empty net, but instead choose a spectacular / diving / tumbling reverse stick swipe, with the ball looping up tamely and well wide of the goal 🤣

WH&E L1 3 : 1 Old Merchant Taylor L1

The day started with a player down and Karen Goode on the floor.

We started pretty slow, unable to get any good chances, apart from a strong run from Beth Deane up the wing and a pass to Bethany… But living up to last week, she fell flat in her back instead of shooting. We were starting to slowly improve by the end of the first half but there were still no goals to either team.

As always, we love a challenge, so decided that it would be better to be losing the match just so we could come back and win it, so Mia decided to give OMT a penalty flick with 20 minutes to go so that we could fight back. 1-0 down after the flick…which Chris very nearly saved!! We then came out all guns blazing and fought back hard. 5 minutes later after great teamwork to get the ball up the pitch, Vicki got it into the net to bring us back to 1-1! This got us excited so kept going. Some people were getting a bit too excited though and dick of the day Rachelle got green carded and sent off the pitch for 2 minutes for knocking the ball away…

But that didn’t stop us either. A beaut straight shot from Sam Deane on a short corner banged straight to the back of the net to take us up to 2-1. And we still kept going. More hard work from us all managed to get the ball back up into the D and Caroline Briers got our 3rd goal with a beautiful reverse stick flick past the keeper!

Final score 3-1!

MOTM: Sam Deane for her relentless work and non-stop running in defence and midfield.

DOTD: Rachelle for her green card!

WH&E L2 2 : 2 Teddingdon L6

WK10L2The ladies 2s played Teddingdon in the late game, with Michelle returning from Germany for her debut this season; scoring two goals. Romy played in goal – and actually got a chance to show her skill!

In the first half we played a fast paced, end to end game. Sonya ran lots of fast balls up the pitch, to Michelle and Charlotte who got lots of brilliant chances. At half time, the score was 1 all.

The second half was even faster paced – somehow – with Gem running up from defence and Sonya creating even more chances for Michelle and Ellie. Kate picked up lots of balls that were passed out by the opposition and sent them back into the D for more goals. Our defence was strong for the whole game, and Sula played fantastically – as per usual – in midfield. The game ended with a well-deserved 2-2.

WH&E M2 0 : 5 Hertford M4

A tough away trip to Hertford for the 4:30pm push back and not the result the M2s were looking for after a hard fought draw the previous week.

WH&E M2 2 : 0 St. Albans M8

First win of the season for the men’s 2s!

Winchmore started strongly, pressing St Albans and sourcing mistakes. There was some beautiful link up play from either side of the midfield and the forwards, which created a number of strong opportunities, while our defence looked solid as a rock. After coming close a couple of times, which made this possession pay off, Luke fired a shot in from the top of the D, and then Peter managed a (lucky) deflection over the keeper. We saw out the first half and went into the break at 1-0 up.

The second-half sewers get a little bit sloppy. We left some space open and didn’t press or mark as hard as we could. But we still looked dangerous and piled people forward into the oppositions 25. Some more lovely link up play from Tom and Theo saw us go close. Then later Luke and Thomas linked up well for a goal, only to see it chalked off for a foot in the D.

We kept pressing and won a short corner towards the end of the second half, which led to a goal, rifled in at the second time of asking by Joe Small, set up by Guy. Then it was a job of seeing the match out which we did for a very well deserved first win of the season, 2-0.

MOTM: Tom Pearson, for some lovely play.

WH&E M1 1 : 1 Bishops Stortford M2

The men’s 1s made the late trip to Bishops Stortford to find the pitch empty and the changing rooms locked. Changing rooms didn’t open to after the game but why couldn’t we play earlier than 15:00? The warm up time didn’t particularly help as Matt Dray testing his back out was just in too much pain to play, continuing his unfortunate run of injury.

Onto the match and after reports of it working well the previous week, we started with the high risk tactic of playing two at the back. While we held our own the pressure was mounting. So a switch back to 3 shored it up a little but we didn’t settle fully until we sorted the midfield shape. A lot of extra work by all in midfield and forward not only kept us in it but saw some nice attacking moves. Colin Foad was a great link between the middle and up front; Jim Gatting picking up his new role as centre forward showed good signs, beating men and hitting the woodwork twice.

At half time we agreed the type of press we would all stick to. We started to dominate the second half with good link up play particularly from Dom on the left. Eventually the breakthrough came through some great passing and Asher Cohen leaving Colin Foad with a finishing opportunity he wasn’t going to miss.

The game became very end to end and even with Josh Cohen and Adam Machray providing great covering support for the defence. It’s not easy to take points at Stortford and unfortunately they sneaked an equaliser to reduce the points from 3 to 1. A short corner partially stopped by Josh Rider but it trickled over the line. The team fought well, continued to play good hockey and chase a win. In the end it wasn’t to be but a good 1-1 score for a point and a performance to build on.

A strong performance from the defence especially Mike and Paul on the wings having to put in an incredible shift and well backed up by Josh in goal. We are improving every game and will start taking more points.

MOTM: Colin Foad and Stuart Carrick.

DOTD: Paul for a post hangover rant in what was an otherwise well-disciplined game from both sets of players which has been another pleasing feature of this season.

Next week we take on the undefeated league leaders Letchworth, aka the ones with everything to lose who haven’t been to Aylward yet.

WH&E L1 0 : 1 Teddington L3

A super tough match for the Ladies 1s against Teddington at home. The weather was uncharacteristically warm and sunny for late October which threw us.

We started with 13 players but unfortunately went quickly down to 12 when Mia had back pain and had to sit out the first half (thus making the intricate subbing plan redundant!).

It’s fair to say we had countless short corners to defend against in the 1st half as Teds piled on the pressure, but we fought really hard to keep a clean sheet in the first half.

In the 2nd half we were back up to 13 but unfortunately still had a few short corners to defend. We managed to get a few breaks and create some chances but unfortunately we were not able to convert. Our defence fought off many chances from the opposition as Mia saved 1 on the line from a short corner, and Chris Putt made a smashing save in the air with her stick to keep the game level.

And then, with just 2 minutes to go… they scored. We piled on the pressure for the last 2 minutes to try and sneak back an equaliser but it wasn’t meant to be. Final score 0-1.

Joint MOTM to Chris Putt for the fantastic save, and to Reanne Umali for being super strong and reliable in the defence and midfield positions.

DOTD to Karen Smith as she, whilst under little to no pressure, couldn’t manage to stop a ball and ended up passing it off the edge of the pitch when we were setting off on a break.

Thanks to Dom and Lisa for umpiring, and shout out to Lisa Jobson for chasing a pigeon off the pitch during the 2nd half 😂

WH&E L2 6 v 0 PHC Chiswick L6

No match report, yet, despite the amazing win!

Rumour has it that Abbi score a hat-trick (much better than the previous week in goal!!), Kate score two, and Gemma one, but the rest remains a story to be told…
