L1s parents' day!Week 5: It was Parents’ Day for the Ladies’ 1s with 4 players’ parents supporting from the sidelines away at Chiswick!! 0-0 was a fair result in the end. There was a clean sheet for #TeamDefence and quite a few chances up front, including Bethany McNamara hitting the post! WHE were also unlucky not to get awarded more penalty corners. The #DeaneTeam put in a good work rate throughout the match and it was a close call but Little Sister Samantha just pipped Beth to Man of the Match.

Next up is a home game against top of the league Harrow. The Ladies’ Summer A team caused a huge upset when they beat “9 wins out of 9” Harrow 5-0. The 1s are hoping history can repeat itself!

A strange one for Men’s 1s this week. They just didn’t get started and went down 3-0 early on. However, WHE kept working incredibly hard and in the last 15 minutes managed a remarkable spurt of three amazing goals from Tim, Craig and Adam. Alas, this was not enough as the final score was 9-3 to Blueharts! The 1s have got the work ethic sorted, the next step is getting their sweet 15 minute spot at the start of the game and then increasing it to 70 minutes! They’ll get their first chance to try this out away at Hertford.

The Ladies’ 2s are ready to continue their great start to the season, which has the 2s scoring two goals in both games played. They are currently sitting in third place in Division 3. Next up is a six-pointer against fourth place Eastcote!

Men's 2s team bonding after hard earned drawThe Men’s 2s kept up their unbeaten record with a 1-1 draw away to top of the league Southgate Adelaide. A tight first half saw few chances at either end, with the game finely balanced 0-0 at half time. The stalemate continued well into the second half until Adelaide took the lead with about 10 mins to go when the ball rolled free to an attacker to slot home after some scrappy play in the middle of our D. But a tactical change from WHE, pushing Grant Wisson forward, immediately made a difference. Some good interplay from a sideline ball down the right-hand side resulted in a neat pull back to Grant by the penalty spot, who slotted past the ‘keeper with a smart first time shot into the bottom corner. 1-1!

The game nearly finished in disappointment as Adelaide appeared to score from a last-minute penalty corner, only for it to be disallowed as the ball didn’t come out of the D first. Phew! In the end, 1-1 a fair result after a hard-fought battle.

Big thanks to Leo Fernandes for playing in goal for the 2s today. After joining us at Back to Hockey in Summer, this is his first season playing hockey. He’s already scored a goal and now saved some today too! Also, a special mention for Rob Ulph putting in a solid performance on his debut. They are looking to keep the unbeaten record going in the next match, at home against Welwyn Garden City.

Week Four: 2-0 whoop, whoop!! The score line did show how much the Ladies’ 2s bossed the game! Everyone had a great game with a special mention for Man of the Match Kate Smith. Thanks to Charlotte Gonella for stepping up and putting in a dazzling goalkeeping performance and well done to Kelly Davids and helper Beth Deane for 2 fantastic goals! Next up will be Eastcote at home on the 28th October.

BOOM! Great performance from the Men’s 2s who won 3-1 away to Shefford & Sandy. With only 10 men, they managed to turn the match around from 1-0 down to 1-3 in their favour. Although they lacked the intensity of an early morning game, the performance definitely merited the win with S & S having only a handful of chances down WHE’s end. Incredible goals by Joe, Harry Stone and Dom. Thanks to Harry Stone and Rafi Zeff for doubling up and playing both 1s and 2s games. The 2’s are looking to continue their unbeaten run away against Southgate Adelaide at noon.

It was a disappointing #derbyday for the Ladies’ 1s, losing 3-0 to Southgate 3s. Despite a number of the team still suffering the effects of Friday night, the 1’s started well and had a few early chances. Southgate then pressed forward in numbers with WHE’s defence thwarting a number of attacks. Chris Putt made some crucial interceptions, with one of their forwards even taking a breather by sitting on Chris’s head! Beth Deane made another goal-line clearance and Sarah E-Q shackled COB well. The deadlock was finally broken shortly before half-time when a snap shot through a crowd of players found its way into the goal. Man of the Match Chris Putt. Hoping for a return to winning ways, the 1’s take on Chiswick away in the early match.

The Men’s 1s got off to a good start against Potters Bar. Tim Mall found space from a short corner after it had initially broken down. A strong strike was reached by the ‘keeper but was too hot to handle! WHE then struggled against very fast breaks from the oppo. and found themselves 3-1 down at half time but still in it. The second half delivered a great penalty flick save from Josh and superb finishing from Jake Sumner for the 1s second goal! It was a 9-2 loss in the end, however, Captain Stuart Carrick is confident it is all fixable, starting with working on their tackling back. They’ll get that chance next up at home against Blueharts.

Week three and the Men’s 2s continued their fantastic start to the season with a convincing win against Stevenage 6. The match was played in the right spirit at a comfortable tempo with plenty of WHE possession paying rich dividends. There was a clean sheet for goalie Rob and goals from Leo, Joe S, Thomas C and two from Colin Angel – his 568th and 569th goals for the club! Thanks go to Dom, Joe and their pitch side support team, directing field players and managing the substitutes! Next week it’s an away game at Shefford & Sandy.

The Ladies’ 2s rocked their first actual match of the season scoring twice (twice!) away against an army of Hampstead and Westminster players, they had 16 to WHE’s 9! Goals going to Kate Smith and newbie Josie, who scored an amazing scoop into the top left-hand corner of the goal, leaving the goalkeeper looking befuddled. Having played so well, fighting hard for the balls, never giving up and linking their passes beautifully, their lack of match fitness and a few “unfortunate” decisions led to a less than desirable final score. Massive thank you to Lorna who stepped up in fluorescent pink to play kicking back. Next week is their first home game of the season against BA Hayes.

The Men’s 1s had their first home game of the season and it was their first time with the luxury of substitutes. A big bonus saw Joe Turmaine being able to play for part of the game. A strong performance with lovely passages of play saw them dominate large parts of the game. Unfortunately, a lucky break from a short corner deflection was followed up by Rickmansworth and proved decisive. Even the opposition said they were lucky during the handshakes! So, they’re frustrated by the scoreline but buoyed by the performance. Saturday brings an away game at Potters Bar.

It’s a win, a loss and now a draw for the Ladies’ 1s, who spent their game defending against some really “enthusiastic” Hampstead and Westminster players. In a pretty even match, no one scored for either side. It could have gone their way if chances had been taken and the umpire hadn’t blown too soon for that penalty corner (his words, haha!). The Hampstead and Westminster keeper just stopped the ball crossing the line and 1s goalie Chris Putt made some fantastic saves, whilst Beth Deane also saved one off the line. Man of the match was Chloe Purchase for her relentless effort on the pitch despite being ill, special mention goes to new player Rachelle who had a great first game. Next week is #DerbyDay at home against The Enemy!

U12sTournament(08-Oct-17)

The U12 junior team had a great day out today, playing the first of this season’s tournaments hosted by Harpenden at the impressive Woollam Playing Fields facility in St Albans. And what a day!

With a squad of 9-11 year olds it was always going to be challenging for our team against the bigger clubs and older players on the Hertfordshire teams. In the first game, Winchmore started strongly and were unlucky to go behind to a well taken first time finish from a right wing cross. Our team fought back well, with Tom, Cameron, Isabella and Seb working well together to create a couple of good chances that just couldn’t be converted. Hertford grabbed a second goal late on with a direct strike from a penalty corner, running out winners 2-0, but the score didn’t reflect the hard fought match.

In the second game, Winchmore took on Blueharts and a tight match ended in a 0-0 draw thanks to some fine goalkeeping from John as well as sterling work in defence from Robbie, Theo and William.

The third match saw our team take on the might of Broxbourne – nemesis of our adult teams, but not for our juniors! In a one-sided game, goalkeeper John didn’t get a touch as Winchmore continuously threated in attack. After a goal-mouth scramble Tom forced the ball over the line for the opening goal and this was followed up with well taken open-play goals from Cameron and Vinny. A 3-0 win for Winchmore but it could easily have been more.

In the final match, we faced a strong Letchworth team who scored early on with a well worked goal knocked in from close range. However, we fought back well and good work in midfield from Ben, Tom and Seb, created several chances for Isabella, Cameron and Vinny, but Letchworth’s goalkeeper and defence managed to hold on for a 1-0 win.

One win and one draw a good return from the first tournament day, with all games played in a very good spirit. And special thanks to Guy Chapman for managing the team and coordinating all the substitutions – no mean feat with 10 players who all want to be on the pitch at the same time!

The next round of matches is on the 5th November, when we will be hosting the U10s tournament at Southbury Leisure Centre. Watch this space for more info!

Week Two provided a much improved Men’s 1’s performance against Broxbourne compared to a difficult first game up at Cambridge against a young Royston Squad. There was a big return from Tim Mall who put in a Man of the Match performance. Solid keeping from Josh Rider and a goal from Harry Stone.
They are looking to get their first points of the season at home to Rickmansworth this Saturday.

Great start to the season for Ladies’ 1’s with a 5-0 win against newly promoted Eastcote 3’s. Unfortunately they followed that up in Match Two by giving away a cheap goal to lose 1-0 to Ashford. It was a very competitive game which has given them lots to work on. MotM was jointly awarded to Karen Goode and Sarah E-Q for amazing effort and a goal line save! Hoping to get back to winning ways, they take on Hampstead and Westminster 4s at home in the noon push back.

A new look Men’s 2s got off to a good start with a 1-1 draw against a useful Southgate Tankards team, there were fine performances from their debutantes, Thomas Mabey, Thomas Chernaik , Hitesh Mody and Leo Fernandes whose nifty turn and finish in the bottom corner had given them the lead! Moving on to Match Two and Dad of the year award goes to little Thomas’s dad, who stepped up and played in goal, when the team found themselves short a couple of players. What a legend! Even more amazing the 10-man team went on to win 3-2 against St Albans. More of the same home to Stevenage please lads!
